These so called examples of ‘ghost’ lettering are becoming increasingly rare as new developments and demolition removes these nineteenth and early twentieth century advertisement. The remaining ones are usual like this one found in Cockermouth in Cumbria, high up on gable walls were access is more difficult. Hard not to love this fearless advert.

    1. Brave bras, bold buckles, daring dungarees, plucky pants, spirited spats, heroic hipsters, gallant gloves, audacious overalls (the last sounds like a band from a John Peel session!). My partner did once make a small contribution via her trumpet on an record by a band called the Desperate Bicycles so anything is possible.
