This blog - now revised - is a compilation of two of my continuing obsessions: old photographs and architectural lettering. The former I find endless facinating, not just because they provide an opportunity to peer into the lives of others, but in the case of cartes-de-visite and cabinet cards, the reverse provide examples of outstanding design in their beautiful motifs and ornamented letters. And its lettering in all their diversity, that represents the source of my other love, in the form of architectural examples. Cut in stone or set in metal, or found as faded painted ghosts, they represent some of the best examples of the skill of designers and artisans, as well as giving us opportunities to recall the lost uses of buildings and the hopes of their creators.
